The frame absorbs light while your room lights are on — or from daylight through a window — and releases it as a green glow once the room goes dark. The glow is even across the whole frame, not patchy in one corner. It is not permanent, and it does not need to be: every time the lights come back on, it recharges itself. That is the entire maintenance routine for the glow.

Does the glow change anything for the ants?

How does the passive humidity system work?
A PVA sponge paired with a reduced orifice opening into the nest zone holds humidity on its own. As long as there is water in the reservoir, the nest stays where it needs to be. No misting, no daily fussing, no guessing.
We build around PVA sponge rather than cotton on purpose — PVA holds water just as well and resists mold far better, and mold in a nest is how beginners lose colonies.
Which ant species can live in a glow in the dark ant farm?
Almost every North American species people actually keep: harvester ants, carpenter ants, pavement ants, and plenty more. We have run this design successfully on Pheidole rhea, Solenopsis invicta and geminata, Camponotus CA02, and Tetramorium immigrans, among others.
Not recommended for honeypot ants or fungus-farming species — those have specialized needs this nest is not built for.
A note on containment: the tolerances on this ant farm keep even small species where they belong. If you are working with an uncommonly small species, watch the setup closely for the first 24 hours and confirm everything is seated before you walk away.
Can I expand it when the colony grows?
Yes — this is a modular, infinitely expandable ant farm. The press-fit ports and 3/8" tubing let you stack frames vertically or run them horizontally, so the colony never outgrows its home and you never have to do a stressful full move. Add a frame, connect it, let them spread out on their own schedule.
Mixing a glow frame with standard frames works exactly the same way.
