Institution-Grade Honeypot Ant Colonies Are Here

For years, serious ant keepers, educators, and institutions have run into the same wall: you can buy a founding honeypot queen, but then you wait. And wait. Building a honeypot colony large enough to display repletes — the living, honey-filled storage ants this group is famous for — can take years of patient care.

We built our new institution-grade collection to remove that wait entirely.

What "Institution Grade" Actually Means

These are not founding colonies. Every colony in this collection is established and one-of-a-kind: a proven laying queen, an active worker force, and brood in all stages, ready to display and grow the day it arrives. Many already show repletes — the signature golden, food-storing workers that make Myrmecocystus the most sought-after honeypot ants in North America.

Each colony is hand-selected from our own stock, listed individually with its exact worker count and price. When a colony sells, it's gone — there are no duplicates.

Six Honeypot Species to Choose From

Our institution-grade collection spans six Myrmecocystus species, each with its own character:

- Myrmecocystus mexicanus — the crown jewel of North American honeypots, known for striking coloration and dramatic, honey-filled repletes.

- Myrmecocystus placodops — the grandest and rarest honeypot in the continental United States, with repletes that hang like amber droplets.

- Myrmecocystus mimicus — a fast, prolific species available in single-queen and multi-queen (polygyne) colonies for accelerated growth.

- Myrmecocystus mendax — a bold, larger-bodied variant prized for early replete production.

- Myrmecocystus navajo — one of the desert's most elusive honeypots, hardy and adapted to dry setups.

- Myrmecocystus depilis — a compact, dark-bodied species with one of the highest replete production rates in the genus.

Built for Keepers, Educators, and Institutions

An established honeypot colony is one of the most engaging living displays in the invertebrate world. For museums, nature centers, schools, and universities, these colonies offer an immediate, active exhibit — no multi-year founding period, no empty test tube waiting on a first generation of workers. For advanced hobbyists, they're a chance to keep a mature colony at full activity from day one.

Whether you're outfitting a classroom formicarium or adding a centerpiece to a private collection, you're starting at the good part.

How We Ship Live Colonies

Every institution-grade colony ships FedEx Priority Overnight, packed in our anti-flood transit system with a hydration reservoir and a pre-installed feeding dish. Our Live Arrival Guarantee applies when overnight shipping is selected, someone is present to receive the package, and all eligibility requirements are met.

We are a USDA-APHIS licensed live ant supplier operating out of Dalhart, Texas. Because federal regulations govern interstate movement of live ants, shipping eligibility varies by species and destination state — each listing shows exactly where that species can ship.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a honeypot ant?

Honeypot ants (genus Myrmecocystus) are desert ants that store liquid food inside specialized workers called repletes. These repletes swell into round, amber, honey-like orbs and hang from the nest ceiling, feeding the colony during lean times.

How big are institution-grade colonies?

Each colony is listed individually with its exact worker count, ranging from active established colonies of around 30 workers up to flagship colonies of 1,000+ workers, all with a laying queen and brood in all stages.

Can you ship honeypot ants to my state?

Shipping eligibility depends on the species and your state, per USDA-APHIS regulations. The approved state list is shown on every product page. Orders from ineligible states are canceled, or at our discretion substituted with a species we are licensed to ship to you, subject to a 15% restocking fee.

Do you offer wholesale or bulk pricing for institutions?

We work with educational and institutional clients directly. Reach out and we'll help you find the right colonies.
