University Mainz, got much closer to an answer.

The surprise: the tapeworm does not imitate the ant's own hormones. It

manipulates the ant indirectly, reaching into the regulatory networks

the ant already uses to run herself.

Two tissues tell the story:

- The fat body - an insect's combined liver and fat reserve - shifts

toward a partially queen-like profile, with altered activity in genes

governing metabolism, immunity, stress resistance, and aging.

- The brain shows many neuropeptides and their receptors turned down,

quieting the signaling that drives activity and normal worker behavior.

Earlier work found the parasite also pumps antioxidant-rich proteins

into the ant's blood. Put together: a worker whose aging program is

partly rewritten, whose stress defenses are boosted, and whose drive to

work has been dialed down.

## Why a Tapeworm Would Bother

Parasites are not generous. The tapeworm cannot finish its life cycle

inside an ant - it only matures inside a woodpecker.

So the ant is a stepping stone. A slow, conspicuously golden ant that

sits in the open and does not flee is a far easier meal for a

woodpecker than a fast brown one. Keeping her alive and pampered for

years simply widens the window for that meal to happen.

programmed rather than fixed. A worker's short life is not a hard
