Please don't substitute a heat mat or a heat lamp. Both heat too broadly, which defeats the gradient, and they can dry out or overheat the nest. Never heat the whole nest — the ants need to be able to choose.

Pogonomyrmex maricopa is the boldest harvester ant you can keep, and it holds the record for the most potent insect venom ever measured — painful to a careless keeper, but not medically dangerous under normal conditions. This is a fast-moving desert native with real presence: workers rear up and go on high alert the second the nest is disturbed, then get straight back to hauling seeds. Colonies grow steadily and the seed-harvesting behavior is one of the best things in the hobby to watch, because the whole crew commits the moment a forager finds something. Handle them with tweezers, keep tubing connections snug, and run the Fluon barrier that comes in the kit. Your colony arrives with a queen, 5-10 workers and brood, so you skip the slowest and most fragile stage of founding.

Maricopa harvesters are seed eaters first. A small seed mix in the outworld is their staple, and they will husk it and build a seed cache inside the nest. Red Ant Drank stays available at all times as their carbohydrate source. For protein, offer fresh killed feeder insects only — never frozen, and never gel.

Live arrival guarantee: your colony is covered for 7 days from delivery. To qualify you must be present to receive the package, and you must contact us within 15 minutes of the delivery notification with clear photos or video of any substantial issue. We do not use signature confirmation, so please watch your tracking and don't let the box sit outside in heat or cold.
